RB/LB: Right Brain, Left Brain
To be left brained is to be logical, focused on facts, organized, planned, and realistic. To be right brained is the opposite: emotional, focused on creativity, imaginative, intuitive, and always looking for new possibilities. The left brained individual looks at the big picture, learns by listening, and never goes into a project without a strategy, while the right brained focuses on minute details, flourishes with visual inspiration, and lets their imagination guide them to creative breakthroughs.
Shouldn’t your designer be both?
I’ve been designing for ten years now, and in 2016 I graduated from Academy of Art University with an MFA in Graphic Design. My time in school did more than teach me program fundamentals and the psychology behind great design, it taught me that the single most important thing a designer can do is have a plan and that the best designers are problem solvers that can work efficiently even when under pressure (aided by unhealthy amounts of caffeine.)
All jokes aside, I believe that you achieve optimal design when you use a careful combination of left and right brained approaches. I begin every new project with a considered plan and timeline, but never let those constraints stifle my creativity. As a designer, I want to help my client’s visions come to life and for them to feel secure in letting me take care of their creative for them, so I make sure to involve my clients early in the process. I develop a strategy based on their business market, their audience, their budget, their timeline, and their own personal style.
